Green Mobility at the Railroad - Charging Infrastructure for the Ore Mountains

November 2022

F&S PROZESSAUTOMATION GmbH, together with six other partners from industry and academia (DB Energie, DB RegioNetz Infrastruktur / Erzgebirgsbahn, Rail Power Systems, Smart Rail Connectivity Campus, TU Dresden / Chair of Electrical Railways, Verkehrsbund Mittelsachsen) is driving e-mobility forward in Saxony. The partners have joined forces under a cooperation agreement to build an innovative charging station for battery-powered trains in Annaberg-Buchholz.

It is particularly worth noting that charging takes place at a mains frequency of 50 Hz, rather than the usual 16.7 Hz. This carefully engineered solution stands out for its compact design and significantly reduced investment costs compared to conventional solutions with frequency conversion. Furthermore, the system’s small footprint allows for installation without a planning approval process.

Following the installation of the system, a testing phase will begin, during which the interactions between rail vehicles and the charging infrastructure, between the charging infrastructure and the power supply grid, and the effects of the charging infrastructure on the existing railway infrastructure will be investigated. Following the successful completion of the test phase, regular service for trains departing from Chemnitz is scheduled to begin.
