Commissioning of the 15-kV test facility in Eferding successfully completed
July 2022
In Eferding, Stern & Hafferl Verkehrsgesellschaft m.b.H. operates a railway workshop where the dual-system locomotives of Linzer Lokalbahn AG are maintained. Until now, however, only 750 V DC operation was possible here; 15 kV AC at 16.7 Hz was not available as a power supply voltage. With the commissioning of the 15-kV test system based on the TIBS LC2 modular system, this gap has now been closed.
The test facility is unique in many ways: Despite its low continuous power rating of 300 kW, it can operate traction vehicles with a power output of several megawatts. This is made possible by the high flexibility of F&S’s proprietary LC2 modular converter system: A differentiated and independent design of the input and output sides for inrush currents, overload conditions, and continuous loads enables a solution tailored precisely to the application.
The 15-kV test facility is powered by the 750-V grid. A particularly practical feature: The container-style facility is located directly on the roof of the local substation—thus avoiding long cable runs. A small sub-distribution unit for the 750-V DC traction voltage, providing direct plug-in power to the vehicles, was easily integrated into the test facility.
Thanks to the containerized design, the connection of all external cables, commissioning, a test run with three different types of multiple units, and training on the operation and maintenance of the system were completed within just one week.
