An undersynchronous power converter cascade from F&S ensures clean air in the foundry

With the successful commissioning of a sub-synchronous converter cascade (USK), F&S is making a significant contribution to reliable and efficient air pollution control in industrial processes. A high-performance drive system has been implemented at the Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH (HKM) site in Duisburg, meeting the highest standards for availability, energy efficiency, and operational safety.
The USK was designed, manufactured, and tested at F[&]S, and subsequently commissioned on-site at Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH (HKM) in Duisburg. The USK powers a 1.5 MW, 5 kV asynchronous motor with a maximum rotor voltage of 1.6 kV.
F&S implemented the sub-synchronous power converter cascade using its own products.
To this end, several of our standard modules were integrated, such as thyristor and diode power modules of the TIBS PM type, thyristor gate units of the TIBS GU3006 type, and a control unit of the TIBS SC1200 type. To meet the increased demands for supply reliability, the output inverter of the USK was designed with redundancy. The surge protection device of the type TIBS OV3001 used for the USK’s DC link is also part of the F&S product family.
