Munich Airport - A New Era Begins in Terminal 2
July 2020
To meet today’s security requirements, a system upgrade of the existing Passenger Steering System (PSS) in Terminal 2 at Munich Airport became necessary 17 years after its installation by F&S. The PSS controls and monitors passenger traffic between the gate and the aircraft or bus during the boarding and deboarding processes.
With this project, F&S successfully carried out the challenging task of replacing active PSS components – such as PLC sub-control centers, servers, and workstations – while production operations were ongoing.
Twenty-four passenger boarding bridges were prepared one by one during the day while operations were ongoing, fitted with new components, converted after the last aircraft had been handled during the night, and subjected to a functional test, so that regular operations could then resume. This tight time window could only be managed by first testing all functionalities on a self-contained test system. With the help of this test system, which had already proven itself during the construction of the new satellite building at Terminal 2, errors – whether in the software or in the workflows of the planned aircraft handling processes – be identified and resolved before the system goes live.
“We replaced a mission-critical system during live operations without causing any significant disruptions to availability and/or functionality. We adhered to the migration schedule and converted every passenger boarding bridge within 24 hours as planned. Optimal preparation, including detailed preliminary tests in Dohna, contributed significantly to this.
The new PSS optimally meets the needs of users at AVVZ and AVTT. The PSS plays a central role in ensuring on-time processing during boarding and de-boarding that complies with all safety requirements.”
