Redesign of the central power supply system for the Potsdam Nord wastewater treatment plant

June 2020

As part of the technological expansion of the Potsdam Nord wastewater treatment plant, adjustments to the electrical infrastructure are required. In particular, the plant’s central power supply must be optimized, restructured, and adapted to future requirements.

A high-performance and fail-safe power supply is a key prerequisite for the safe operation of modern wastewater treatment plants. In addition to supplying the existing facilities, future expansions and redundancy requirements must also be taken into account.

Our Mission:

The fundamental concept for the future energy supply of Energie- und Wasserwerke Potsdam.

The project will address the following tasks, among others:

  • Circuit design for the new low-voltage main distribution system (replacing the existing one), taking into account all possible feeders from the distribution network operator
  • Ensuring emergency power supply via two emergency power generators
  • Filter design and performance of a harmonic analysis
  • Verification of selectivity and determination of the setting parameters for all protective devices downstream of the low-voltage main distribution panel in the new systems
  • Expansion of the existing network model developed by E&A
  • Performing load flow and short-circuit current calculations
  • Creating a single-line diagram of the future power supply
  • Preparing a cost estimate for the planned measures

The goal is a technically optimized and reliable power supply structure for the expanded facility.

Engineering Services for Complex Energy and Infrastructure Facilities

The redesign of the power supply for the Potsdam Nord wastewater treatment plant serves as a prime example of the requirements that must be taken into account when planning electrical infrastructure in technical facilities. In addition to the structural design of the power distribution system, grid analyses, supply reliability, selectivity, and the integration of redundant systems play a central role.

Projects of this nature require close integration of electrical engineering planning, system analysis, and a thorough understanding of the facility. From network modeling and calculations of load flow and short-circuit currents to the conceptual development of the power distribution system, this creates a robust foundation for the safe operation of complex facilities.
