Internships and theses for students
Purpose and objective
Big data – but how can it be used to benefit your business? In order to reuse archive data to gain insights for process optimization, maintenance, etc., it is necessary to analyze and classify the elements, process data, or metadata. This analysis and evaluation is based on the use of modern tools. Your task is to evaluate these tools and determine their capabilities and limitations using existing data sets.
Research and evaluation of suitable tools, e.g.:
- Zenon Analyzer
- Open big data solutions
- Established evaluation systems (e.g., ALCEDO)
- Others (research)
Of interest to
- Electrical engineering students specializing in automation, process informatics, or other relevant fields
- Ideally with some experience working with simulators
Purpose and objective
Partially generic creation and transfer of technological topology models into and from network control systems in the field of electricity, heating, and gas networks. The focus here is on the consistent generation of data models and communication with their sources and sinks, as well as associated locking conditions and visualizations.
a) Subtopics in the SCADA area
- Conversion of data and topology models from one control system to another
- Generation from network calculation tools, e.g., PowerFactory
- Creation and validation of test algorithms
b) Subtopics in the PLC/RTU area
- Network status calculation, standard solution for 50-100 nodes
- Defining data model and interfaces
- Implementation of integrated interfaces to SCADA
Of interest to
- Electrical engineering students specializing in automation
Purpose and objective
To minimize project risks and shorten system commissioning times, processes to be automated are simulated in advance. To do this effectively, after years of using a tool, we want to review the extent to which it is the best option for the future.
- Comparison of the two PLC simulators PLC-SIM and WinMode
- Creation/expansion of the library of digital twins of functions and operating resources.
Of interest to
- Electrical engineering students specializing in automation
- Ideally with an understanding of electrical and process engineering or
- Previous experience with automation systems or simulators
Purpose and objective
Integrated project planning for automation and maintenance levels has been state of the art for decades, provided that a system with uniform manufacturers and versions is available. It is a completely different challenge to have the same requirements for heterogeneous system architectures. F&S has an object library for the project planning of control and monitoring technology for distributed energy and media supply systems. Your task could be to expand this library to include network management functions.
The task in detail
Together with your mentor, you will select relevant operating resources and functions, for example from existing simulations or completed pilot projects, and define the scope of functions and interfaces. As a result of this basic engineering, you will convert these into versionable objects for PLC, RTU, and SCADA.
Interesting for
- Electrical engineering students specializing in automation
- Ideally with an understanding of electrical and process engineering or
- Previous experience with automation systems or simulators
Purpose and objective
In increasingly integrated production and entire technical life cycle processes, cloud and edge computing solutions are increasingly becoming the technical basis for mapping production, logistics, maintenance, and service processes. At the same time, this creates new challenges, processes, data, and the need to protect their integrity in the IT environment. The objective of this topic is to help develop a proven solution for project business in this sector.
The tasks in detail
- Research into open-system cloud solutions: What else is there besides MindSphere and PROFICLOUD?
- Range and limits of application: In-depth comparison of selected solutions and products, advantages and disadvantages in comparison between individual IoT solutions and M2M portals, typical applications and references
- Investment and follow-up costs for IT security, data sovereignty
- Interfaces and functional distinctions from edge systems and user applications
Of interest to
- Electrical engineering students specializing in computer science, automation, or industrial engineering
- Ideally, experience with industrial cloud applications
